Phillip VanFossen is the James F. Ackerman Distinguished Professor of Social Studies Education at Purdue University's College of Education. He currently serves as Director of the Ackerman Center for Democratic Citizenship and Faculty Athletic Representative. Previously, he was Interim Associate Dean for Learning (2016-2017), Department Head (2011-2016), and Interim Head (2010-2011) of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

His research focuses on K-12 economic and civic education, technology integration in social studies classrooms, and the use of online role-playing games for educational purposes. VanFossen’s publications span over 80 scholarly works, including co-authored curricular materials like FOCUS: High School Economics and FOCUS: Middle School World History. His recent work analyzes the Electoral College’s historical origins and assesses digital learning tools for social studies education.
