Phillip Johnson is a Professor of Commercial Law at Cardiff University's School of Law and Politics. He specializes in intellectual property law, with additional expertise in legal and parliamentary history, sports and entertainment law, private international law, and public law. He is a practicing barrister at the Intellectual Property Bar, holds memberships in multiple national and international legal associations, and serves as a tribunal judge for trade mark and design disputes. Johnson is also the editor of the Intellectual Property Quarterly and author of seminal legal texts on patents, breach of confidence, and ambush marketing.
Johnson studied law at Durham University, earned an LL.M. from Queen Mary, University of London, and completed a Ph.D. on private international law and the internet. He has advised governments, industry bodies, and international organizations like the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). His research focuses on IP law's historical development, modern challenges in enforcement, and international legal frameworks.
Notable roles include chairing the SLS Library Sub-Committee and co-convening the SLS Intellectual Property Section. He has held visiting professorships at institutions like University College Dublin and has contributed to major legal journals and encyclopedic works. His work frequently addresses contemporary issues like digital rights, post-Brexit IP frameworks, and trademark litigation in online markets.
