Donnelly’s research explores the historical convergence of theology, philosophy, and literary theory. He has contributed significantly to Milton studies, Augustinian reception in postmodern criticism, and the ethical dimensions of classical grammar and rhetoric. His work often bridges biblical hermeneutics with Renaissance poetics and pedagogy.
Recent publications include The Lost Seeds of Learning (2021), analyzing classical trivium arts, and essays on Bonaventure’s theology of poetics (2023) and Milton’s rhetorical engagement with Plato (2007). His 2009 monograph on Milton’s scriptural reasoning remains a key reference in theological literary studies.
He has secured major grants as Co-PI for National Endowment for the Humanities seminars on disputatio as a tool for wisdom in the humanities (2022-24; $189,999) and (2020-21; $86,448), collaborating with Todd Buras and Angel Adams Parham.
