Philippe Vidal serves as a Lecturer at the University of Le Havre, France, affiliated with UMR IDEES 6266 (Institute for Space, Earth and Environment Sciences), a joint research unit of CNRS and the university. His academic work bridges geography and digital society studies through empirical investigations of territorial transformations.
His research program examines ICT's impact on spatial dynamics through three foundational questions: unequal diffusion patterns across territories, generated territorial dynamics, and conditions under which ICT restores spatial value. This framework applies to diverse domains including tourism systems, disability accommodations, aging populations, intercommunal governance, peri-urban housing markets, and rural development strategies, reflecting an interdisciplinary approach to contemporary geographical challenges.
His 2016 ACHS conference presentation on geocaching exemplifies his methodological innovation, analyzing location-based gaming as a lens for heritage reinterpretation and spatial reconfiguration. This work demonstrates consistent thematic focus on how digital practices reshape physical and social landscapes while maintaining geographical rigor in territorial analysis.
As an active member of UMR IDEES 6266, Vidal contributes to France's national research infrastructure focused on integrated spatial, environmental, and societal systems, operating within CNRS's collaborative scientific framework.
