Philippe Tortell is a Professor in the Department of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences and Botany at the University of British Columbia (UBC), part of the Faculty of Science. His research focuses on marine biogeochemical cycles, particularly the dynamics of climate-active gases like CO₂, DMS, CH₄, and N₂O. He leads projects in the Subarctic Pacific, Canadian Arctic, and Antarctic regions, employing advanced measurement techniques such as mass spectrometry and fluorescence-based methods. Key contributions include refining net community production estimates and elucidating sulfur cycle mechanisms in polar and subpolar waters.
Education: B.Sc. (Honours) from McGill University (1994), M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University (1997 and 2001). He held roles as Assistant (2002–2009) and Associate Professor (2009–2015) before becoming Full Professor in 2016. His work integrates field campaigns, laboratory experiments, and numerical modeling to address climate and ocean health challenges.
Research interests include iron’s role in primary productivity, trace gas dynamics in anoxic environments like Saanich Inlet, and the physiological ecology of phytoplankton. He supervises graduate students in Oceanography and Botany, with notable advisees including Brandon McNabb. His group develops novel instrumentation, such as the autonomous OSSCAR system for sulfur compound analysis.
Key projects involve the Ocean Station P time series, Arctic methane and nitrous oxide studies, and the impact of deoxygenation on marine ecosystems. Collaborations with institutions like the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre and SCOR Working Groups enhance interdisciplinary research on global biogeochemical cycles.
