Philippe Peigneux is a Tenure Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium, where he co-directs the Neuropsychology and Functional Neuroimaging Research Unit (UR2NF) affiliated with the Center for Research in Cognition and Neurosciences (CRCN) and ULB Neurosciences Institute (UNI). With over 200 peer-reviewed publications since 1996, his research examines sleep-memory interactions, cognitive processes across vigilance states, and neural plasticity in healthy and clinical populations using multimodal neuroimaging (fMRI, EEG, MEG, NIRS).
His core research focuses on:
- Sleep-dependent memory consolidation mechanisms
- Neurocognitive impacts of sleep loss and interventions
- Motor skill acquisition and neuroplasticity
- Aging and pathological conditions (ADHD, MS, epilepsy)
- Within-sleep stimulation techniques for memory enhancement
Recent publications demonstrate strong emphasis on sleep neuroimaging methodologies, motor memory consolidation dynamics, and developmental aspects of cognitive processing. Work frequently integrates behavioral paradigms with advanced neural measures to map plasticity across wake-sleep cycles.
Professor Peigneux has held significant leadership roles at the European Sleep Research Society including President (2012-2016) and Scientific Committee membership, reflecting his standing in the field. He currently supervises doctoral research on sleep fragmentation, motor learning, and age-related neurocognitive changes.
