Philippe Grönquist is a Junior-Professor of Timber Engineering at the University of Stuttgart's Institute of Construction Materials. His academic role focuses on advancing timber engineering through innovative material science and structural design. He holds a M.Sc. in Civil Engineering (2016) and a Ph.D. in Building Materials (2020), both from ETH Zurich. Prior to his current position, he worked as a Postdoc at ETH Zurich’s Institute of Structural Engineering (2020–2022) and as a scientific assistant at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science & Technology (2016–2020).
His research interests span timber-concrete composites, adhesive technologies, sustainable construction materials, and structural analysis. He explores topics such as hygroscopic self-shaping wood, residual stress in bonded wood, and the mechanical behavior of engineered wood products. His work bridges material innovation with practical applications in civil engineering.
Prof. Grönquist leads administrative roles in the Department of Materials and Construction and the Department of Fastening and Strengthening Methods. His contributions include advancing 4D self-shaping mechanisms for curved timber structures and improving bondline properties in timber-concrete systems. He regularly contributes to academic conferences and collaborates on projects emphasizing timber’s role in sustainable architecture.
