Dr. Philippe Claeys is a Professor of Chemistry, Archaeology, Environmental Change, and Geochemistry at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where he leads the transdisciplinary Archaeology, Environmental Changes & Geochemistry (AMGC) research unit. He holds visiting professorships at Ghent University, University of Liège, and the University of British Columbia. His expertise spans planetary science, impact processes, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction, with a focus on asteroid/comet impacts and their effects on Earth's bio-geosphere.
Education includes a PhD from the University of California, Davis (1993), and postdoctoral research at UCLA and UC Berkeley. He has authored over 770 publications and led projects such as the 'Binnenstebuiten - The X-Ray Approach' and 'AMGC Basisfinanciering'. Key awards include Fellow of the Geological Society of America (2012) and the Bone Diagenesis 2021 Best Student Poster (shared).
Research interests include meteorites, mass extinctions, and analytical methodologies. His work integrates geochemistry, stratigraphy, and astrobiology, with active roles in scientific communication and public engagement.
