Philipp Zobel, MA, is a researcher at the University of Regensburg, affiliated with the Chair of Historical Image Studies under Prof. Vera Beyer. Since 2021, he has been conducting doctoral research on the ceramic production of El-Hoda in Cairo (1924–1947), focusing on its role in articulating Egyptian identity and social emancipation. His work bridges art history, cultural studies, and museum practices, emphasizing transcultural dynamics in Islamic-influenced art.
Education: M.A. in Art History (Free University of Berlin) with a thesis on Lebanese artist Salwa Raouda Choucair, awarded the 2020 Johann Albrecht Widmanstetter Prize. Prior roles include academic traineeship and curatorial work at Berlin’s Museum of Islamic Art, notably co-curating exhibitions like Status Mach Bewegung (2020) and Capturing Iran’s Past (2019).
Research Interests: Islamic art historiography, glocal negotiations of 'Arabic' art, museums as cultural mediators, and the socio-political dimensions of 20th-century art production. His doctoral project critiques Eurocentric art historiography by analyzing El-Hoda ceramics’ intersection of tradition, nationalism, and feminist activism.
Awards: 2020 Johann Albrecht Widmanstetter Prize for thesis on Saloua Raouda Choucair. Curatorial contributions include Sehnsuchtsort Garten (2021) and Radiance of the Alhambra (2021), highlighting transcultural art dialogues.
