Philipp Scheibelreiter

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Philipp Scheibelreiter is a Professor of Ancient Legal History and Roman Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna since 1 March 2018. He previously served as Professor of Roman Law at Johannes Kepler University Linz (2017-2018) and held an Acting Chair at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich (2013-2015). His academic career spans roles as Assistant Professor (2009), Associate Professor (2014), and Deputy Director of his institute (2018-present).

  • Doctorate in Law, University of Vienna (2000)
  • Dissertation: Investigations into the contractual structure of the Delian-Athenian League (2005)
  • Habilitation in Roman Law (2015)

His research focuses on Roman law, Greek law, and comparative studies of Ancient private law and international law, integrating insights from Classical Philology (Greek Studies). Recent work examines economic transactions and property ownership in Roman law, particularly retention of title mechanisms.

He has contributed to interdisciplinary legal pedagogy through sample solutions for module exams, reflecting his engagement with Legal Education and Cross-disciplinary Teaching. Scientific recognition includes the Premio Lauro Chiazzese (2013) and ROM Scholarships (2008, 2010).

Currently, he serves as Deputy Director of the Institute for Roman Law and Ancient Legal History and is a Co-editor of the journal Dike - Rivista di Storia del Diritto Greco ed Ellenistico. His affiliations include the Standing Committee of the German Association of Legal Historians (2022-present) and the Commission for Legal History of Austria (2022-present).
