Philipp Leucht, MD, PhD serves as Raj-Sobti-Menon Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Biology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He also holds the position of Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Leucht is an orthopedic trauma surgeon specializing in the treatment of fractures involving the ankle, wrist, tibia, femur, pelvis, and clavicle.
Dr. Leucht received his medical degree in 2002 from Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, followed by orthopedic residency training at Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. He completed fellowship training in Orthopedic Trauma at Stanford Hospital and Clinics in 2009 and a residency at Stanford University School of Medicine in 2014.
Dr. Leucht's research centers on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of bone healing, with particular focus on skeletal stem cells, growth factors, and the impact of aging on regeneration capacity. His laboratory investigates how bones heal through studies on skeletal development, mechanical stimulation effects on bone regeneration, and stem cell-based tissue engineering strategies. His work has identified adult functions of Hox genes during skeletal regeneration.
Dr. Leucht's research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and several orthopedic foundations, including the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. His laboratory has published 159 publications with recent work focusing on fracture outcomes, readmission prediction, and nutritional factors affecting bone healing.
As Vice Chair for Research, Dr. Leucht leads the Leucht Laboratory focused on Bone Biology & Regeneration. His team includes Research Assistant Professor Sophie Morgani, Senior Research Scientist Kevin Leclerc, Post-Doctoral Fellow Margaux Sambon, MD-PhD Student Matt Rytel, and Research Assistant Rohan Phadke. The laboratory investigates aging effects on skeletal progenitor cells, positional memory of skeletal stem cells, signaling pathways responsible for aging, and regenerative medicine approaches for bone healing.
