Dr. Philipp Köhler is a Group Leader of the Medical Sensors Group at the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at Helmholtz Munich. He leads research in optoacoustic sensing technologies for clinical applications, focusing on portable devices for early disease detection and monitoring. His work integrates physics, spectroscopy, and machine learning to develop diagnostic tools for diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and dermatology.
Education:
- Bachelor’s and Master’s in Physics, Technical University of Munich
- Second Master’s in Nanotechnology (University of Cambridge)
- PhD in Physics (University of Cambridge), specializing in spectroscopy/optics
Research interests include optoacoustic imaging, wearable medical devices, and technology commercialization. He bridged academia and industry via entrepreneurship courses at Cambridge Judge Business School and collaboration with startup Cortirio (fNIRS brain injury detection).
Awards: Multiple grants including the Medical Valley Award 2020 and Helmholtz Innovation Prize. Focus areas include prototyping, market analysis, and translating research into clinical tools.
Labs/Teams: Medical Sensors Group at IBMI, collaborating with the International Photoacoustic Standardisation Consortium (IPASC) and University of Cambridge.
