Philipp Casula

Philipp Casula serves as a Lecturer at the University of Basel's Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (WWZ), while also holding dual roles as Subject Specialist for Economics and Teaching Specialist at the University Library's Business Department (SWA). Based at Schönbeinstrasse 18-20 in Basel, he specializes in Soviet historical engagements with the Middle East and post-colonial movements.

His research interests focus on Soviet cultural diplomacy, Cold War international relations, and Marxist revolutionary movements in the Arab world. Casula examines how the Soviet Union deployed soft power through cultural centers and intellectual exchanges, particularly analyzing Soviet responses to post-colonial thinkers like Frantz Fanon and involvement in regional conflicts such as the Dhofar Rebellion.

Recent publications reveal a consistent thematic focus on Soviet-Arab relations during the Cold War era, with particular attention to how Soviet ideology intersected with Middle Eastern decolonization movements.
