Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Philipp Beckerle is a Professor (W3) and chair of the Chair of Autonomous Systems and Mechatronics at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Information Technology (EEI) and the Department of Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg. His office is located in Room 02.036 at Paul-Gordan-Straße 3/5, 91052 Erlangen.
Dr. Beckerle earned his mechanical engineering degree with specialization in mechatronics from TU Darmstadt in 2009 and completed his doctorate in mechatronics from the same institution in 2014. His academic journey includes serving as deputy director, senior engineer, and junior research group leader at TU Darmstadt from 2014 to 2018, with visiting researcher positions at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Arizona State University, and the University of Siena. From 2018 to 2020, he led the Elastic Lightweight Robotics research group at TU Dortmund University as a junior professor (W1).
Dr. Beckerle's research focuses on human-centered mechatronics and robotics, with specific interests in wearable robotics, elastic actuators, body schema, and human-robot interaction. His work bridges engineering principles with human factors to create intuitive robotic systems for rehabilitation and assistance. His research approach emphasizes user-centered design throughout the development process.
His publication record reveals a strong focus on practical applications of robotics in healthcare, with particular emphasis on making robotic systems more responsive to human needs. The trajectory of his work shows progression from fundamental actuator research to integrated human-robot interaction frameworks and user-centered design methodologies.
Dr. Beckerle's contributions have been recognized with several prestigious awards:
- Manfred Hirschvogel Prize
- MINT Excellence Promotion Prize
- Eugen Hartmann Prize 2017 (for his work on fault diagnosis in elastically actuated robots)
As an educator, Dr. Beckerle teaches courses including Human-centered Mechatronics and Robotics, Mechatronic Components and Systems, and supervises student projects and theses through the Teaching section of his department. He maintains an active research laboratory that likely collaborates with international partners across Europe and North America.
