Professor Philip Ward is a faculty member at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), affiliated with the Schizophrenia Research Unit at Liverpool Mental Health Centre, Liverpool Hospital. He holds a BMedSc and PhD from UNSW. His research focuses on schizophrenia, first-episode psychosis, neuroimaging (fMRI, MRI), and lifestyle interventions to improve mental and physical health outcomes in at-risk populations. Collaborations include institutions such as KU Leuven (Belgium), King’s College London (UK), and universities in Brazil, Uganda, and Australia.
Research interests include brain plasticity, cannabis use as a psychosis risk factor, auditory sensory memory, and efficacy of cognitive remediation. He has published over 360 journal articles, 78 conference papers, and 11 conference proceedings. His work spans global initiatives like the Lancet Psychiatry Physical Health Commission and culturally sensitive interventions in Uganda.
Recent projects emphasize lifestyle psychiatry, surf therapy, and pandemic mental health tracking via the COH-FIT study. He advises on mental health policy and collaborates internationally on programs like Addi Moves and NutriMental screening tools.
