Research interests include postcolonial literature’s affective dimensions, the monolingual ideal in modern writing, and the global reach of Victorian and modernist aesthetics. Tsang’s 2021 book The Obsolete Empire analyzes how British literature shaped cultural attachments amid imperial contraction, challenging linear narratives of colonial-to-postcolonial transitions. His current project examines monolingualism’s ideological underpinnings in literature.
Teaching focuses on global literary movements: courses include Global Victorians, Global Modernism, and Literature and History of British India, emphasizing transnational perspectives and historical contexts. His scholarship spans 19th- and 20th-century texts, with a particular focus on authors like Henry James, James Joyce, and V.S. Naipaul.
