Associate Professor Philip Terrill is an academic in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Queensland. He holds the title of Discipline Leader in Imaging, Sensing and Biomedical Engineering, and serves as Deputy Associate Dean Academic (First Year) in the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology since 2019. He earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering (2011) and BEng (Honours) from the University of Queensland.
His research focuses on bridging clinical physiology and biomedical engineering, particularly in respiratory and sleep medicine. Key areas include developing novel diagnostic tools (e.g., electronic instrumentation, signal processing) for pediatric and adult sleep disorders, and mathematical modeling of physiological systems. Specific themes include:
- Quantifying ventilatory control mechanisms in obstructive sleep apnoea
- Designing posture-monitoring systems for sleep apnoea severity assessment
- Actigraphy systems for pediatric sleep analysis
- Cardio-respiratory stability in preterm neonates
Recent work emphasizes non-invasive assessment of respiratory instability, loop gain analysis, and translational research to clinical settings. He has collaborated widely, publishing in journals like Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine and CHEST, and presented at international conferences such as the American Thoracic Society meetings.
His teaching roles include academic leadership in engineering education and curriculum development, with a focus on improving student engagement and conceptual understanding.
