Philip Shields is a Professor of Philosophy & Religious Studies at Beloit College. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1991), alongside an M.A. (1988) and B.A. (1982). His research focuses on embodiment, normativity, agency, and ethical theory, with a particular emphasis on classical philosophies (Greek, Chinese) and religious thought. Shields critiques modern notions of autonomy, arguing they conflict with the inherently social and value-laden nature of normativity.
