Philip LoVerde

Dr. Philip LoVerde is a Researcher at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, specializing in schistosomiasis for over 50 years. His work focuses on the genetic basis of drug resistance and developing novel derivatives to enhance treatment efficacy alongside Praziquantel.

Dr. LoVerde conducts extensive field research globally, particularly in Egypt, studying freshwater snail transmission and parasite biology. His recent work identified sulfotransferase as a key resistance gene and screened over 150 derivatives for improved efficacy against Schistosoma species.

As an active mentor, he has guided 27 Ph.D. students and 17 postdocs, emphasizing skills in scientific communication and grant writing. Collaborators include experts from Texas Biomedical Research Institute and UTSA's Center for Innovative Drug Discovery.
