Philip Kitcher is the John Dewey Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University, where he previously served as Chair of the Contemporary Civilization program. Educated at Christ’s College, Cambridge (Mathematics) with a PhD in Philosophy/History and Philosophy of Science, he has held academic positions at Vassar College, University of Vermont, University of Minnesota, and University of California at San Diego before joining Columbia.
His research specializes in the intersection of science and religion, examining epistemological and ethical conflicts between these domains. He extends his philosophical inquiry to literature through courses on James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, exploring narrative philosophy and modernist literature.
Kitcher received Columbia's Trilling Award for distinguished intellectual contributions. He maintains an active teaching profile with courses including 'Science and Religion' and continues to influence philosophical discourse through public engagement.
He collaborates closely with his spouse, Patricia Kitcher (also a Columbia philosophy professor), though no formal research teams or laboratories are documented.
