Philip Joseph is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Colorado Denver. He specializes in modern American literature and ethnic American literature, with a focus on war narratives, regionalism, and vernacular language. Since 2002, he has taught courses ranging from "Race and Ethnicity in American Literature" to "The Harlem Renaissance."
- Co-founder and former director (2007-2014) of the Colorado Center for Public Humanities
- Published in top journals like PMLA, American Literature, and MELUS
- Active in interdisciplinary research connecting literature, history, and social justice
His research explores the global migration of the picaresque narrative and its application to war stories, as seen in his current book project: Rogues in Combat: The Deep History of the Picaresque War Narrative, 1668-Present. His publications span topics from Zora Neale Hurston's legal critiques to child soldiers in Nigerian fiction.
