Dr. Philip Johnstone is a Principal Research Fellow at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) within the University of Sussex Business School. His research focuses on the political and democratic implications of sociotechnical change, energy policy, and system change investing in finance. He leads the Deep Transitions Lab project, examining how financial investments can drive sustainability transitions.
His work spans governance of sociotechnical transformations, disruptive technologies in energy systems, and the interplay between civil and military nuclear power. Notable projects include analyses of nuclear waste management, smart energy transitions, and the role of shocks/warfare in driving systemic change. He has contributed to governmental inquiries (e.g., Public Accounts Committee) and media outlets like the BBC and New York Times.
Dr. Johnstone holds a PhD in Public Engagement with Nuclear Power from the University of Exeter and has held postdoctoral roles on ESRC-funded projects. He currently supervises one PhD student and has guided three others to completion. His teaching includes modules on sustainable development, science policy, and energy politics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
He actively promotes Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in academia and serves as a patron of the Nuclear Information Service and advisor to Medact’s Nuclear Weapons Group. Past roles include coordinating the Tyndall Centre at Sussex and organizing SPRU’s Wednesday seminar series.
