Philip Johnson is a Professor of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Hawaii and Director of the Collaborative Software Development Laboratory (CSDL). His research focuses on Climate Change mitigation strategies, Food Resiliency systems, Software Engineering pedagogy, and Educational Technology innovation. He leads major initiatives like the NSF Descartes project applying data science to infrastructure challenges and GeoGardenClub promoting community-driven food sustainability.
Johnson's work spans over 30 years in software engineering education, developing frameworks like the Morea Framework for course management and the Athletic Software Engineering pedagogy, which emphasizes high-intensity skill acquisition. He has pioneered professional portfolio systems for students through projects like TechFolio Designer and the ICS Portfolios platform.
His research extends into sustainability through initiatives like the Kukui Cup energy competition and the Change HI project addressing climate change through actionable science.
