Dr. Philip Hosegood is an Associate Professor in Physical Oceanography at the University of Plymouth's School of Biological and Marine Sciences, part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He specializes in observational physical oceanography with over 20 years of experience in marine measurements and has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications. His research focuses on submesoscale dynamics, continental shelf processes, and the role of physical oceanography in shaping marine ecosystems, particularly in the tropical Indian Ocean and Antarctic regions.
Education:
- PhD cum laude from Utrecht University (processes driving turbulent mixing over continental slopes)
- Postdoctoral work at the University of Washington's Applied Physics Laboratory (submesoscale influences on oceanic mixed layers)
Research Interests:
- Internal waves and coral bleaching mechanisms
- Manta ray ecology and fish behavior over seamounts
- Submesoscale dynamics in shelf seas and the Southern Ocean
- Impacts of oceanographic processes on tropical marine protected areas (e.g., Chagos Archipelago)
Grants & Leadership: Principal Investigator on multiple research grants, including studies on the Indian Ocean's ecosystem drivers and Antarctic submarine slope processes. He leads the Marine Physics Research Group and co-ordinates the BSc Oceanography & Coastal Processes programme.
Labs/Teams: Member of the Marine Physics Research Group (marinephysics.org) and the University's Marine Institute.
