Philip Brou is a Professor and Chair of the Painting Department at Maine College of Art & Design. He holds an MFA in Painting from The Ohio State University and a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. His practice bridges conceptual art, installation, and painting, often exploring themes of identity, time, displacement, and human conditions.
Key projects include Keeping Track of Time (2021-22), a series of 197 ink drawings documenting daily runs, and Letting Yourself Go (2015-present), which deconstructs identity through mythological narratives. He has also created installations like The Way We Were (2008-09), a tornado chamber housing portraits of high school classmates, and Pause (2006-08), a kinetic sculpture referencing The Wizard of Oz.
Brou’s work has been supported by grants such as funding from the Greater Columbus Arts Council for Pause. His exhibitions include installations at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art’s 2023 Biennial. Contact via pbrou@meca.edu or philip@philipbrou.com.
