Dr. Philip Baiden is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Arlington and Associate Editor for the Journal of Research on Adolescence. His expertise lies in social determinants of health, child and adolescent mental health, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and suicide prevention. He holds a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Toronto, an M.A. in Sociology from the University of Western Ontario, and a B.A. with First Class Honors in Sociology and Philosophy from the University of Ghana.
His research focuses on the long-term impacts of ACEs, mental health disparities among marginalized populations, and interventions to reduce suicide risk. Notable awards include the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship-Doctoral (SSHRC) and multiple grants from NIH and private foundations. Dr. Baiden teaches research methods and statistics, mentoring numerous students in theses and dissertations.
Key collaborations include projects on trauma-informed care, juvenile justice systems, and cross-cultural studies of ACEs in Sub-Saharan Africa. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles in journals like American Psychologist, Journal of Psychiatric Research, and Psychiatry Research. His work has been featured in US News and World Report, Science Daily, and HealthDay.
Dr. Baiden’s funded research includes NIH grants on LGBTQ youth suicide prevention, opioid misuse, and interventions for children experiencing homelessness. He actively engages with policymakers to translate research into actionable solutions for youth mental health equity.
