Philip Alpers is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Sydney School of Public Health, University of Sydney. He is the founding director of GunPolicy.org, a global project comparing firearm injury prevention and gun law across 250 jurisdictions. His work focuses on reducing armed violence through public health approaches, international policy, and technical solutions like ArmsTracker, a weapon management system deployed in over 30 states. Alpers has participated in UN small arms programs and co-founded the Centre for Armed Violence Reduction (CAVR), addressing arms control and sustainable development globally.
Research Interests: Firearm injury prevention, armed violence reduction, small arms proliferation, post-conflict disarmament, gun trafficking, and policy implementation. His expertise spans firearm regulation, licensing, and international treaties compliance.
Recent Work: Recent projects include evaluating ArmsTracker’s impact in low-capacity states, analyzing Australia’s post-1996 gun laws, and advocating for regional Pacific arms control. His publications examine global firearm policies, mass shootings, and the intersection of guns with public health and sustainable development.
