Philip Albert Leighton (1897–1983) was a Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and Executive Head of the Department of Chemistry (1940–1951). He held leadership roles including Dean of the School of Physical Sciences (1946–1950) and Chair of the Department of Physical Sciences (1940–1942). His research focused on photochemistry of gases and air pollution, leading to the creation of Stanford’s Aerosol Laboratory and Metronics Associates, Inc. He consulted widely on environmental issues and authored seminal monographs on air pollution.
- Education: AB (1920), AM (1923) in Chemistry from Pomona College; AM (1925), PhD (1927) in Chemistry from Harvard University.
Research interests included aerosol science and environmental chemistry, with contributions to understanding air pollution dynamics. His wartime service as a Colonel in the US Army earned him the Legion of Merit Medal. Post-retirement, he remained active as a consultant and researcher.
- Awards: Legion of Merit Medal (1945), Air Conservationist Award (1961), Honorary DSc (1963).
Leighton played pivotal roles in institutional development, including planning for the Stanford Research Institute. His legacy includes foundational work in environmental chemistry and institutional leadership.
