Professor Phil Purnell is a Visiting Professor at the Royal College of Art (RCA)'s Materials Science Research Centre and Director of the University of Leeds Cities Theme. His work focuses on sustainable materials, circular economy systems, and resource management. He leads interdisciplinary research on urban infrastructure resilience, waste recovery, and low-carbon solutions. Purnell has secured over £10.7M in UKRI grants and pioneered methods for lifecycle analysis of materials. He collaborates across academia and industry, including projects with artists, sound engineers, and policymakers. His research spans construction materials, critical materials, and medical biomaterials, with over 70 journal publications.
