Phil Brown

Phil Brown is a Teaching Professor of Chemistry at NC State University and Director of the NC State Trans-Atlantic Science Student Exchange Program. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Boston College (1981), a Ph.D. in Chemistry from NC State University (1986), and completed postdoctoral research in Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University (1988). His research focuses on bacterial genomics, antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, and foodborne pathogens, particularly Listeria monocytogenes. Recent work includes genomic analysis of Listeria strains isolated from humans, wildlife, and food environments, emphasizing resistance to disinfectants and antibiotics. He is also engaged in developing innovative teaching tools, such as 3D-printed Sanger sequencing activities to improve student comprehension of molecular biology concepts.

In addition to his academic role, Brown directs a trans-Atlantic student exchange program fostering international collaboration in science education. His research has addressed diverse topics including bacteriophage resistance mechanisms, cadmium resistance genes in Listeria, and the role of wildlife (e.g., black bears) as potential vectors for bacterial pathogens.
