Phil Bart is a Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Louisiana State University (LSU), within the College of Science. His research focuses on the Cenozoic history of the Antarctic cryosphere, particularly the evolution of the Antarctic Ice Sheets during the Neogene and Quaternary. He holds a PhD in Sedimentology and Sequence Stratigraphy from Rice University (1997). His work integrates seismic stratigraphy, biostratigraphy, and field data to understand glacial dynamics, sea-level changes, and climate interactions.
Bart's research has been funded by the NSF Office of Polar Programs and industry partners. Key projects include studies of Antarctic Peninsula overdeepening, West Antarctic Ice Sheet retreat patterns, and Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) sea-level reconstructions. He has advised numerous graduate students, many of whom now work in industry roles (e.g., oil and gas, environmental consulting). His contributions include over 50 peer-reviewed publications and leadership in initiatives like the Ross Sea Multibeam Mapping Project.
Research interests span high-latitude glacial systems, low-latitude clastic stratigraphy, and Antarctic marine geophysics. Notable achievements include the 'Overdeepening Hypothesis' explaining modern Antarctic Peninsula glacial dynamics and advancements in dating ice-sheet grounding events using foraminifera. Bart also collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, such as reconstructing Mississippi River delta aggradation using radiocarbon dating.
Awards include the NSF Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (2001–2007). He teaches advanced courses like Antarctic Marine Geology and Sequence Stratigraphy, and maintains an active role in LSU's Geoscience Alliance for Minority Participation program.
