Petter Nielsen is a Professor at the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo, specializing in large-scale information systems, digital platforms, and health informatics in developing countries. He leads the Information Systems research group and serves as Head of the PhD program at his department.
His research focuses on:
- Digital innovation in resource-constrained settings
- Architecture of health information systems
- Governance of digital global public goods
- Socio-technical aspects of platform ecosystems
- Frugal innovation for healthcare
Recent work examines scaling digital platforms (DHIS2, OpenMRS) across sectors and regions, with emphasis on institutional dynamics, standardization, and pandemic response systems. Publications highlight hybrid solutions in health informatics and the role of boundary resources in platform adoption.
