Professor Petri Luomanen is a leading scholar in Biblical Studies at the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Theology. He holds a Docent title and supervises the Doctoral Programme in Theology and Religious Studies. His research focuses on Early Christianity, cultural evolution, and interreligious dynamics, with a particular emphasis on apocryphal texts and moral philosophy. Luomanen has led major projects like The Spread of Early Christianity in Cultural Evolutionary Perspective, funded by the Academy of Finland, and contributed to the NordForsk network on socio-cognitive perspectives in Early Judaism and Christianity.
He has been recognized with the HYVÄT supervisor prize (2019) and is a founding member of the University of Helsinki’s Teachers’ Academy. His work bridges theology with social sciences, analyzing religious texts through frameworks like cognitive science and evolutionary theory. Luomanen has authored over 130 publications, including edited volumes such as Christianity and the Roots of Morality (2017), and frequently participates in international conferences, editorial roles, and media engagements (e.g., Alfa Studio, EABS Vlog).
As a mentor, Luomanen has supervised doctoral theses and contributed to academic governance, including roles in research councils and thesis committees. He actively collaborates across disciplines, exemplified by his involvement in the Centre of Excellence in Reason and Religious Recognition Research.
