Petri Kursula is a Full Professor at the Department of Biomedicine, University of Bergen, Norway, with a secondary affiliation at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, University of Oulu, Finland. He leads the BiSS core facility at the University of Bergen, specializing in structural biology and biophysics. He earned his PhD from the University of Oulu in 2000, followed by post-doctoral research at Biocenter Oulu, EMBL Hamburg, and the Karolinska Institute.
His research focuses on structural biology and biophysics, particularly proteins essential for forming the myelin proteolipid membrane in the nervous system. His work employs photons, neutrons, and electrons to study macromolecular complexes, integrating methods like X-ray crystallography and neutron scattering.
He received the Academy Research Fellowship from the Academy of Finland in 2006. As a LINXS Fellow and Guest Researcher (2025), he contributes to the Chemistry of Life Theme's Working Group 1, investigating structure-function dynamics of macromolecular complexes.
