Petri Ala-Laurila is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering at Aalto University. He holds a Doctoral degree (2003) and Master's degree (1999) in Engineering and Technology from Helsinki University of Technology.
His research focuses on the neural mechanisms of vision, particularly the retinal circuitry underlying sensitivity to light at extreme low intensities. Key areas include phototransduction, retinal ganglion cell function, and the interplay between photoreceptors and neural coding in vision.
Ala-Laurila has received notable awards including the Academy of Finland Award for Scientific Courage (2014) and Neuroscientist of the Year Award (2020). He leads projects such as 'Plasticity and function of the rod/cone gap junction in the retina' and coordinates EU-funded initiatives like enTRAIN Vision. His work has been featured in high-impact journals like Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Nature Communications.
- Key Projects: Retinal photon detection limits, cone photoreceptor speed in vision
- Grants: EU H2020 MC projects, Academy of Finland funding
He actively engages in academic outreach, delivering invited lectures globally and organizing conferences such as the enTRAIN Vision Summer School.
