Petra M. Vogel is a Professor in the Department of German Studies - Linguistics at the University of Siegen, Faculty I. She is actively engaged in research and teaching, with a strong focus on the structural and historical aspects of the German language. Her work is deeply rooted in empirical dialect research and she leads key linguistic projects at the university.
Research Interests: Her primary research areas include morphology and syntax of German, the historical development of the German language, and typological and contrastive studies of German dialects. She investigates language variation across regions, particularly in the Central West German dialect area, where High and Low German meet.

Research Projects: She is the project leader at the Siegen site for the Dialect Atlas of Central West Germany (DMW), a major linguistic survey examining dialects in the southeastern part of the DMW region. This area includes districts such as Siegen-Wittgenstein, Hochsauerlandkreis, and independent cities like Bonn and Leverkusen. The study region is marked by the Benrath Line, which separates Low German (north) from High German (south), and the Rhenish Fan, a set of isoglosses resulting from the Second Sound Shift. The project uses extensive questionnaires (approx. 800 questions) to document phonological, morphological, syntactic, and lexical features of regional varieties, including speaker perceptions and Wenker sentences for historical analysis. Data collection includes speakers from both older (70+) and younger (30–45) generations to assess language change over time.
The DMW team in Siegen includes scientific staff, technical support, student assistants, and former contributors. The digital maps on the project website are continuously updated with new recordings and data.
Scientific Awards:
Advising and Grants: As project leader of a major linguistic atlas initiative funded by the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and Arts, Prof. Vogel oversees a significant research grant and leads a multidisciplinary team. While no explicit list of advisees is provided, her leadership role and academic rank imply supervision of graduate students and early-career researchers.
Labs and Teams: She leads the DMW research team at the University of Siegen, which includes scientific researchers, project coordinators, technical staff, and student assistants. The team conducts fieldwork, data processing, and public outreach. Former members have contributed across various roles, including exploration, coordination, and technical support.
