Dr. Peter Unwin is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the Department of Community, Social Justice and Health, University of Worcester. With over two decades at the institution, he has contributed to its growth while specializing in safeguarding, foster care, and service user/carers' involvement. His career spans social work in apartheid-era South Africa, senior management roles in local authorities, and running a domiciliary care business.
Qualifications include a PhD from the University of Warwick, PGCE from the University of Huddersfield, and multiple social work-focused degrees. His teaching emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and Carl Rogers’ learner-centered approach, focusing on safeguarding, foster care, and service user co-production.
Research interests center on privatization/marketization of welfare services, agency social workers, child sexual exploitation (CSE), and barriers to foster care for disabled individuals. Current projects include studies on disability representation in Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities and CSE-related parental exclusion. He co-leads the IMPACT service user/carers group and chairs the Worcestershire branch of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW).
