Peter Sunley

Professor Peter Sunley is a Professor in Human Geography at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on regional development, industrial policy, and spatial economic dynamics, with notable work on the UK’s Levelling Up agenda, green industrial transitions, and manufacturing resilience. He currently supervises five PhD students in Geography and collaborates on ESRC-funded projects addressing regional disparities and economic policy. His external roles include serving as Editor of the Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy and Society and as a reviewer for multiple national and international research councils.

Professor Sunley’s research interests span economic geography, regional development, and the intersection of policy and spatial inequality. His recent work emphasizes the interplay between industrial strategies and regional economic transformation, particularly in coastal and post-industrial areas. He has contributed to debates on green energy pathways, urban-rural divides, and the impacts of financialization on regional economies.
