Peter Simpson

Peter Simpson is an Associate Professor at the UQ Centre for Clinical Research and an Affiliate Associate Professor in the School of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Queensland. He serves as Theme Leader for Cancer and Group Leader in Cancer Genomics, and holds a joint teaching and research position as a Senior Lecturer in Pathology for the Faculty of Medicine MD Program. Simpson is also affiliated with the Centre for Extracellular Vesicle Nanomedicine and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Science in the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia.

Dr. Simpson's research program focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of cancer development and progression to improve diagnosis and patient management. His primary research interests include invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast, familial breast cancer, and lung cancer diagnostics. He has established himself as a leader in applying genomic technologies to understand cancer heterogeneity and develop better molecular classification systems that can predict tumor behavior and treatment response. Simpson's work bridges basic science with clinical applications, particularly in optimizing next-generation sequencing approaches from small diagnostic samples.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on breast cancer genomics, with particular emphasis on molecular subtypes, biomarkers for prognosis and treatment response, and the application of novel technologies like nanoparticle drug delivery systems for difficult-to-treat metastases. Simpson's research team also investigates lung cancer diagnostics, particularly optimizing sequencing approaches from small samples obtained through endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration. His work spans multiple disciplines including molecular pathology, cancer genomics, and translational medicine.

Dr. Simpson is a member of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (Breast Cancer group) and has been instrumental in establishing the Brisbane Breast Bank. He collaborates extensively with researchers across Australia and internationally, contributing to large consortia studies that advance our understanding of cancer genetics and genomics. His work has significant implications for precision oncology and personalized cancer treatment approaches.
