Peter Schönknecht

Peter Schönknecht is a Professor of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University of Leipzig. He serves as Medical Director of the Academic Saxon State Hospital Arnsdorf and heads the Outpatient Department for Prevention and Forensic Psychiatry at University Hospital Leipzig. His roles include leadership in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, overseeing clinical services in affective disorders, geriatric psychiatry, and emergency psychiatry.

• Education: MD from Universität Leipzig (1996), Dr. med. summa cum laude (1997), postdoctoral qualification (2005) and Habilitation (2005) from Heidelberg University

Research focuses on neurobiological mechanisms underlying mental disorders, particularly hypothalamic dysfunction, neurocognitive disorder prediction, and forensic psychiatry prevention. His work combines neuroimaging (MRI/PET), biomarker analysis (BDNF, nicotinic receptors), and clinical trials. Key areas include mood disorders, pedophilic offender neurobiology, and geriatric psychiatric interventions.

He leads the Subcortical Dysfunction Research Group and contributed to major initiatives like Pharma-Cog (drug candidate prediction) and the LIFE Study. Awards include the Alzheimer Research Initiative Prize (2005) and World Congress of Biological Psychiatry Prize (2001).
