Peter Schneider is a renowned German writer and scholar, currently serving as the George M. Roth Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at Georgetown University since 2001. He holds a dual affiliation with the German Department and has held visiting professorships at Stanford, Princeton, Harvard, and other prestigious institutions since 1985. Born in 1940, Schneider studied German, History, and Philosophy, completing his Staatsexamen in higher education before embarking on a literary career.
His research interests focus on 20th-century German cultural and political dynamics, with a particular emphasis on post-war identity, Cold War divisions, and transnational narratives. His seminal works like The Wall Jumper and Couplings critically examine sociopolitical themes through literary innovation.
