Peter S. Bearman is the Jonathan R. Cole Professor of Sociology at Columbia University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He serves as Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Innovative Theories and Empirics (INCITE), Co-Director of the Health & Society Scholars Program, and Editor of the Handbook of Analytical Sociology. His research focuses on network analysis, historical sociology, and social determinants of health, including pioneering work on the autism spectrum disorder epidemic.
He co-designed the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health and has authored influential works such as Doormen (2005) and Relations into Rhetorics (1993). Bearman holds the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award (2007) and edits a Princeton University Press series on analytical sociology with Peter Hedström.
His current research explores intersections between social structures and public health, leveraging interdisciplinary methods. He leads INCITE, which bridges theory and empirical research across disciplines.
