Peter Ronner, PhD, is a Professor and Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the College of Life Sciences. His primary research investigates the mechanisms regulating insulin and glucagon secretion from pancreatic cells, with a current emphasis on ATP-sensitive potassium channels (KATP) in glucagon-secreting A-cells. He employs advanced methodologies including electrophysiology, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and custom-developed luminometric microhistochemical assays.
His laboratory studies span normal and tumoral endocrine cells, building on prior work examining Ca2+,Mg2+-ATPase in human erythrocytes and hormone dynamics in teleost fish pancreatic systems. Research interests focus on:
- KATP channel pharmacology in pancreatic islet cells
- Real-time monitoring of adenosine phosphates (ATP/ADP/AMP)
- Interspecies comparative endocrinology
