Peter Pettengill is an Associate Professor in the Environmental Studies Department at St. Lawrence University, where he has been teaching since 2015. Prior to academia, he worked with the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management, conducting fieldwork in Acadia, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Zion National Parks. His scholarly contributions include co-authoring the second edition of Managing Outdoor Recreation: Case Studies in the National Parks.

Pettengill's research focuses on the intersection of national parks with broader societal issues and the philosophical dimensions of human-nature relationships. He actively engages students in critical dialogues about the democratic ideals of parks and their role in shaping environmental stewardship. His recent work explores the Adirondacks region, both personally and professionally.
