Prof. Peter Overbeck is a Professor and Prorektor (Vice Rector) at the Karlsruhe University of Music, overseeing teaching, studies, and digital initiatives since October 2022. He holds the endowed professorship for 'Applied Trimedial Production' at the LernRadio Institute, specializing in music journalism, media production, and media ethics. Overbeck's career includes roles as music director at Swiss Radio DRS-2, freelance journalist for major broadcasting networks, and editorial leadership at LernRadio.
Education: Studied piano and sound engineering at the University of Music Detmold (1990), earned a Magister in comparative musicology and Romance studies from Paderborn, Basel, and Heidelberg (1993), and a Ph.D. in 18th century English music history (1998). Awards include the Bayreuth Fellowship (1996) and Bertelsmann Foundation Music Criticism Fellowship (1997).
Research focuses on trimedial production, media ethics, 18th century music history, and the intersection of technology with music journalism. Active in professional societies: Chair of Karlsruhe Handel Society, jury leader for Handel Youth Competition, and board member of the International Handel Academy. His publications span musicological analyses, media studies, and practical guides for radio/TV production.
Teaching contributions include digital pedagogy (earning Baden-Württemberg's Higher Education Didactics Certificate in 2017) and internship coordination for the B.Sc. KulturMediaTechnologie program. Supervised media productions for Wergo, Hänssler, and other labels. Current projects emphasize e-learning integration and OER development in music education.
