Professor Peter Oppeneer is a faculty member in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University, Sweden, where he leads the Materials Theory research group. He also serves as a Mercator Fellow for the TRR227 research consortium focused on ultrafast spin systems and correlated matter.
His research spans theoretical condensed matter physics with emphasis on ultrafast magnetism, orbitronics, unconventional superconductivity, and strongly correlated electron systems. Professor Oppeneer's group develops advanced theoretical frameworks and computational tools to investigate femtosecond laser-induced magnetic processes, out-of-equilibrium spin and phonon dynamics, and ab initio descriptions of complex quantum materials. His work addresses fundamental questions about ultrafast demagnetization, magnetization switching, and light-induced magnetic phenomena, with particular focus on spin dissipation channels like superdiffusion and Elliott-Yafet electron-phonon spin-flip scattering.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on ultrafast demagnetization processes, altermagnetism, terahertz spin dynamics, and unconventional superconductivity. His work frequently combines first-principles calculations with experimental collaborations to address fundamental questions in quantum materials science. The research shows increasing emphasis on non-equilibrium phenomena and topological aspects of magnetic materials, with significant contributions to understanding femtosecond coherent light-induced magnetic processes and the development of numerical simulation codes for real materials.
- Developed home-made self-consistent multiband Eliashberg code for unconventional superconductivity
- Advanced theory of hidden order and multipolar magnetic order in correlated materials
- Computational theory for molecular spintronics and spin-crossover materials
- Theory of ultrafast thermalization processes in metals after laser excitation
Professor Oppeneer maintains active collaborations with experimental groups worldwide, particularly those working with ultrafast laser techniques and X-ray spectroscopy. His theoretical predictions have guided numerous experimental investigations into the fundamental mechanisms of ultrafast magnetic phenomena, with implications for future spintronic technologies operating on femtosecond timescales.
