Prof. Peter Messerli is a leading academic in sustainable development at the University of Bern's Institute of Geography. As Director of the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), he focuses on land systems, socio-ecological governance, and global sustainability. His research spans Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America, addressing issues like large-scale land acquisitions, telecoupled systems, and sustainable development goals. He has published extensively on land-use dynamics, conservation trade-offs, and policy frameworks, contributing to global initiatives like the UN Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR 2019). His work emphasizes transdisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based policymaking to reconcile environmental, economic, and social challenges.
Key projects include the Land Matrix Initiative tracking global land deals, and analyses of shifting cultivation impacts in Madagascar and Laos.
