Peter McBurney is a Professor specializing in Artificial Intelligence, Distributed Systems, and Computational Finance. His affiliations include roles in hubs such as the Informatics Finance Hub and Distributed Artificial Intelligence Security Hub. He holds a PhD in Rational Interaction from the University of Liverpool (2002) and a Bachelor of Arts in Pure Mathematics & Statistics from the Australian National University (1980).
He serves on the Academic Advisory Council of the Financial Conduct Authority since 2018. His research focuses on Autonomous Agents, Blockchain Technology, Multi-Agent Systems, and the ethical implications of AI. Recent work includes studies on Sybil Attacks in blockchain, cooperative language learning in AI, and healthcare simulation modeling.
McBurney has led or co-investigated multiple research projects, including grants from the Royal Academy of Engineering and EPSRC. His 132+ publications span conferences like IJCAI and journals such as the International Journal of Parallel, Emergent and Distributed Systems.
