Peter May is an Assistant Research Professor at the University of Maryland's Department of Environmental Science & Technology, within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. With over 35 years of experience, he specializes in systems ecology, functional ecology, ecosystem restoration science, and ecological engineering, particularly involving the Algal Turf Scrubber® technology. His work spans municipal, governmental, NGO, private, and academic sectors globally.
- Education: Ph.D. in Environmental Science (Marine-Estuarine Environmental Sciences) and B.S. in Natural Resources Management (Aquatic Resources Emphasis), both from the University of Maryland.
His research focuses on urban and coastal ecosystems, tidal marsh restoration, stream restoration, watershed management, and low-impact development projects in cities like Washington, D.C., New York, Houston, and internationally in Brazil. He has led projects in Brazil’s Niteroi and Rio de Janeiro, applying novel ecotechnologies and restoration strategies.
Peter’s expertise includes designing and monitoring restoration efforts, integrating ecological engineering solutions into urban environments, and collaborating across sectors to address environmental challenges.
