Peter Koch Gehlshøj is a Research Fellow at the University of Copenhagen's Department of Arts and Cultural Studies. His PhD research is part of the project 'Voices, Places and Quarrels,' funded by the Augustinus Foundation, Bikuben Foundation, Louis-Hansen Foundation, and ArtEx. This interdisciplinary initiative examines Denmark's music drama heritage (1721–1854) through historical analysis and performative workshops with The Royal Danish Academy of Music, focusing on marginalized historical narratives.
Gehlshøj's research explores the capacity of music and performing arts to reshape spatial practices and historical discourse. His work investigates street theater's role in redefining public spaces, music's atmospheric dimensions (analyzing composers like Debussy and Messiaen), and critical reexaminations of opera through practice-based methodologies. Central themes include cultural memory, socio-political conflicts in art, and the intersection of performance with urban environments.
His 2025 publications demonstrate consistent engagement with opera criticism, historical reenactment theory, and composer biographies. Works span musicology, cultural studies, and performance theory, with frequent application of practice-based research to decode historical power dynamics in music theatre.
Professional activities include membership in the Reumert Jury (2024–present), artistic management for the experimental collective HAUT, music criticism, and primary school opera history instruction. He maintains affiliations with the Theatrical Voice Research Centre and International Federation for Theatre Research.
Gehlshøj is funded through the 'Voices, Places and Quarrels' project grants. He has participated in workshops at The Royal Danish Academy of Music and undertaken research residencies at The Danish Institute at Athens and The Danish Academy for Science and Art in Rome.
